How to Buy Bitcoin & Crypto with Green Dot

You can use Green Dot to buy Bitcoin on CEX.IO through any Green Dot-issued debit or prepaid card. Green Dot Bank issues Visa and Mastercard variants under several consumer brands, including the Green Dot Prepaid Visa, the Green Dot Prepaid Everyday Mastercard, GO2bank, and the Walmart MoneyCard. Each card works like a standard debit card at checkout. You can enter the card details on CEX.IO or link the card to Google Pay or Apple Pay for a mobile-first flow.

However, the Green Dot app is not available as a payment method on CEX.IO. You cannot pick “Green Dot” at checkout, so all purchases run through the card or a linked wallet.

In this guide, we explain how Green Dot works, what fees and daily limits apply on CEX.IO, and which alternative payment methods are available.

Disclaimer: CEX.IO does not support the Green Dot app as a payment method. Green Dot cards work for crypto purchases through standard card-payment rails. Daily POS spending limits on Green Dot prepaid cards may cap how much you can buy in a single day.

What is Green Dot?

Green Dot Corporation is a US fintech and bank holding company founded in 1999 and headquartered in Austin, Texas. Green Dot Bank, its wholly owned subsidiary, is a Member FDIC bank that issues prepaid Visa and Mastercard debit cards plus checking accounts. Green Dot has managed more than 80 million accounts to date through its direct products and partner programs.

Green Dot operates several consumer brands:

  • GO2bank, a digital and mobile bank account
  • Green Dot Prepaid Visa and Green Dot Prepaid Everyday Mastercard
  • Green Dot Cash Back Visa
  • Walmart MoneyCard, now offered as a demand-deposit account

Green Dot also runs the Green Dot Network, a cash-reload and pay-in network of more than 95,000 retail locations across the US, including Walmart, CVS, Walgreens, 7-Eleven, and Dollar Tree.

How does Green Dot work?

Green Dot Bank issues the card and account. You load funds onto the card through direct deposit, an ACH bank transfer, a cash reload at a Green Dot Network retailer, or an in-app transfer. The card sits on the Visa or Mastercard network, so any merchant that accepts Visa or Mastercard accepts your Green Dot card.

For purchases, Green Dot routes the transaction through the card network. The merchant requests authorization, Green Dot Bank approves the payment when you have funds available, and the merchant captures the amount. For crypto purchases on CEX.IO, this is the same flow you use for any other card payment.

Green Dot also powers banking-as-a-service products for other fintechs through its Arc platform. Crypto.com partnered with Green Dot in April 2025 to give US customers new account, savings, and money-movement features powered by Arc. The partnership runs at the banking-rails layer. You cannot buy crypto inside the Green Dot app.

How to Buy Bitcoin with Green Dot

To buy Bitcoin with Green Dot on CEX.IO, you use the Green Dot debit or prepaid card at checkout. Sign in to CEX.IO, open Instant Buy, choose your asset and amount, then enter the Green Dot card details.

You can also link your Green Dot card to Google Pay or Apple Pay. CEX.IO supports both, so you can buy crypto and confirm the transaction from your phone.

How to Buy Bitcoin at CEX.IO: a Step-by-Step Guide

The buying flow is the same for every Green Dot variant. The four steps below cover Instant Buy with a Green Dot card.

Step 1: Create and verify your account

Sign up on CEX.IO using your email address and set a secure password. Confirm your email, then complete identity verification in your account dashboard or through the mobile app.

You will need to:

  • Provide basic personal information
  • Upload a valid ID document (national ID, driver’s license, or passport)
  • Complete any additional checks if prompted (US-based users typically complete a short questionnaire)

Verification gives you access to card payments and CEX.IO features available in your region.

Step 2: Open the Instant Buy section on CEX.IO

Once your CEX.IO account is ready, log in and head to the Buy Cryptocurrency tab:

  • Specify your fiat currency
  • Enter the amount you want to spend
  • Choose BTC or another supported asset
  • Click Buy Crypto Instantly to move to the Add Funds page

Step 3: Select Your Payment Method

On the Add Funds page, choose card payment and enter your Green Dot card number, expiration date, and security code. Use the billing address that matches your Green Dot account. Follow the on-screen instructions to complete authentication.

If you prefer e-wallets, link your Green Dot card to Google Pay or Apple Pay first, then pick that wallet at checkout.

Step 4: Receive Bitcoin in your CEX.IO Wallet

After Green Dot approves the payment, CEX.IO credits Bitcoin to your CEX.IO Wallet. In most cases this happens within seconds, although timing depends on authorization checks.

Once you receive your BTC, you can hold it, trade it on Spot Trading, convert it via CEX.IO Convert, or use other features available in your region.

Green Dot transfer fees and limits

When you use a Green Dot card on CEX.IO, you pay the standard card fee structure: 0.49% to 4.99% plus a service charge, with a minimum deposit of $20. You see the full cost breakdown before confirming.

If you link your Green Dot card to E-Wallet, the same fee range applies. Deposits through these wallets cap at $1,000 per transaction.

Green Dot applies its own limits on top of the CEX.IO card fee:

  • Daily POS spending limit: up to $3,000 per day on most prepaid variants
  • Daily ATM withdrawal limit: $500 on the Reloadable Prepaid Visa, $2,999 on the Prepaid Everyday Mastercard
  • Activation fee: $1.95 on the Reloadable Prepaid Visa
  • Monthly service fee: waived when you load $1,000 or more in the previous month

Check your specific Green Dot card’s terms in the app for the exact daily and monthly limits that apply to your account.

What payment methods are available at CEX.IO?

Green Dot cards work for many users, although prepaid daily limits can cap larger crypto purchases. CEX.IO supports several direct funding methods that give you more control.

Buy BTC with an e-Wallet

E-wallets handle quick mobile checkouts well. You can buy crypto with Apple Pay or Google Pay by confirming the transaction directly on your device.

US-based customers can also buy crypto with PayPal (available only in this country). You connect your account once, approve the payment, and CEX.IO handles the rest.

Buy BTC with Bank Transfer

For larger amounts, a bank transfer gives you more control. US-based users can fund their CEX.IO accounts via ACH for a $5 flat fee. EU customers use SEPA for €2.99 per transfer. UK customers use Faster Payments for £2.99. International users can send funds via SWIFT.

Once funds land in your CEX.IO account, you convert them into Bitcoin using Spot Trading or CEX.IO Convert. This route comes with lower fees and supports larger transaction sizes.

Buy Bitcoin with Cash

If you prefer cash, two routes work. One is a Bitcoin ATM, where you deposit cash and send BTC directly to your CEX.IO Wallet. Bitcoin ATMs typically charge higher markups.

Another route is MoneyGram. Deposit cash at a participating location, fund your CEX.IO account in USDC, and use those funds to complete the purchase.
