Theta Network (THETA) Price Chart

Founded in 2017, Theta Network was established as a blockchain protocol aiming to enhance the creation and streaming of video content. After the mainnet launch in 2019, multiple new features and services were added to the Theta ecosystem, including:

Video API, which lets users add video to websites and applications without using centralized servers and video hosting software.
EdgeStore that offers a decentralized storage and content delivery network.
Edge Network, which focuses on AI edge computing and various other tasks.

As a result, Theta Network developers now position the project as a “decentralized cloud for AI, media, and entertainment.”

What is Theta Network (THETA) token?

Theta Network adopts a dual-token architecture, which includes THETA and TFUEL.

THETA serves as a governance token that participants can stake to secure the network and earn TFUEL as a reward. THETA has a fixed max supply of 1 billion tokens.

TFUEL acts as a “gas token,” which is primarily used to perform transactions within the Theta Network. When allocating their computing resources for specific network tasks, users receive TFUEL as a reward.

How does Theta Network (THETA) work?

Theta Network consists of two complementary subsystems: Theta Blockchain and Theta Edge Network. The first one facilitates payments, rewards, and smart contracts, while the second delivers available computing power for AI and video rendering tasks.

Theta Blockchain

Theta Blockchain utilizes a modified Byzantine Fault Tolerance (BFT) consensus algorithm, which combines a committee of 20-30 enterprise validator nodes and over 3,000 community-run guardian nodes. Enterprise validator nodes stake THETA tokens to propose and finalize new blocks within the Theta Blockchain, while guardian nodes ensure security by checking enterprise validator nodes’ actions. Some of the most prominent Theta’s enterprise validators include Google, Samsung, and Sony.

In December 2022, Theta Metachain was launched, which revamped the blockchain design, now consisting of one “main chain” and multiple “subchains.” Each subchain can execute transactions independently, potentially offering a significant boost in scalability.

Theta Network also features smart contracts compatible with the Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM), empowering developers to create a wide array of decentralized applications (dApps). However, at the time of this writing, Theta’s DeFi ecosystem is quite nascent, with only a few projects being deployed, according to DeFiLlama.

Theta Edge Network

In addition to enterprise validator and guardian nodes, the Theta community may also run edge nodes to allocate their spare bandwidth for various computing tasks, including AI and video rendering. At the time of writing, Theta’s Edge Network consists of over 10,000 edge nodes.

In Theta’s documentation, developers claim that their Edge Network has 80 petaflops of distributed GPU compute power, which is 20-30 times more than other comparable networks.

Theta Network experienced a series of funding rounds in 2017 and 2018, with the THETA token becoming available on open markets in early 2018 at around $0.18. Over time, the THETA price experienced both significant appreciation and downward movements, registering an all-time high at around $15.90 in April 2021, and an all-time low near $0.04 in March 2020.

Theta EdgeCloud is scheduled to launch in the first half of 2024.
