How to Sell USDT in the UK

USDT holders in the UK may choose to convert their balance into GBP or another supported asset, depending on the services available to their account. CEX.IO gives eligible UK customers access to several ways to manage a USDT balance, including conversion and trading features, once the required UK onboarding checks have been completed.

This article looks at the routes available for selling USDT, how each one works, what fees and limits may apply, and what you can do with the resulting fiat or crypto balance after the transaction.

How to Sell USDT in the UK on CEX.IO?

The steps you need to follow depend on whether you already store USDT. If you have a USDT balance in your CEX.IO Wallet, you can move directly to the selling stage and choose an available route for converting it.

If you store USDT elsewhere, or do not own it yet, you will first need to prepare your account and add USDT before those selling steps become relevant.

If you already store USDT at CEX.IO

If USDT is already available in your CEX.IO Wallet, you can move directly to the selling stage. The main decision is what you want to receive in exchange, since the available route will depend on whether you want GBP or another supported asset.

  1. Open your USDT balance in CEX.IO Wallet.
  2. Choose what you want to receive in exchange for USDT, such as GBP or another supported asset.
  3. Select Spot Trading or CEX.IO Convert.
    1. With Spot Trading, you choose an available USDT market and place a sell order using the order types provided through the trading interface.
    2. Convert presents the exchange details and quoted amount before you confirm.
  4. Review the transaction details shown for the selected service before proceeding.
  5. Complete the exchange and check the resulting balance in your CEX.IO Wallet.
  6. Decide what to do next.
    1. If you receive GBP – you can request a withdrawal through a supported method available to your account and jurisdiction.
    2. If you receive another crypto asset – you can keep it in your wallet or transfer it to an external address where supported.

If you store USDT in an external wallet

You do not need to acquire USDT again if you already own it outside CEX.IO. In this case, you can transfer the tokens to your CEX.IO Wallet before using the available selling services.

Open Wallet, find USDT, and select the deposit function to view the details required for the transfer. USDT operates across different blockchain networks, so check that the network selected in the sending wallet matches one supported for deposits on CEX.IO. You should also verify the destination details before submitting the transfer.

Once USDT reaches your CEX.IO balance, you can follow the same selling process described above to exchange it via Spot Trading or Convert.

If you do not have a CEX.IO account or USDT balance

Customers starting without an account need to complete the account setup first. Register with CEX.IO and complete the required UK onboarding process, including identity verification, facial recognition, the appropriateness assessment, and, for first-time participants, the 24-hour cooling-off period.

After completing these requirements, you can add USDT to your balance in several ways, depending on what is available to your account.

You may transfer USDT from an external wallet, purchase it through our Buy Cryptocurrency feature, or add GBP to your CEX.IO balance and exchange that balance for USDT through Spot Trading or CEX.IO Convert.

If you want a separate walkthrough of the purchase process, our How to Buy USDT in the UK guide covers the relevant steps in more detail.

Once USDT forms part of your CEX.IO balance, the same account can later be used to exchange it when you decide to sell. If that transaction results in GBP, you can then continue to the withdrawal stage and choose from the supported routes shown for your account.

How to Exchange USDT at CEX.IO?

Once USDT is available in your CEX.IO Wallet, you can exchange it through Spot Trading or CEX.IO Convert. The asset you receive does not have to be GBP. Depending on the trading or conversion pairs supported for your account and region, you may be able to exchange USDT for another fiat currency or crypto asset.

Sell USDT on Spot Trading

Spot Trading lets you exchange USDT on an available market and place an order for the trading pair you select.

  1. Open Spot Trading after signing in to your CEX.IO account.
  2. Select a pair that matches the fiat currency or crypto asset you want to receive.
  3. Depending on what is available in the trading interface, you can choose how you want the order to be entered into the market.
  4. Enter the amount of USDT you want to exchange.
  5. Review the order details, including the selected market, amount, price information, and applicable trading fees.
  6. Place the order once you have checked the information shown.
  7. Monitor the order status. Execution depends on the order type and available market activity.
  8. Check the resulting balance after the order executes. The fiat currency or crypto asset received from the trade will appear in your CEX.IO account.

Keep in mind the markets available to you can vary by jurisdiction, so the list of USDT pairs shown in Spot Trading may differ between accounts.

Use CEX.IO Convert to Exchange Tether

CEX.IO Convert provides another route for exchanging Tether without placing an order on the Spot Trading order book. Instead, you select the assets involved and review the quoted exchange details before confirming the conversion.

  1. Open CEX.IO Convert from your account.
  2. Select USDT as the asset you want to exchange.
  3. Choose the asset you want to receive. This may be a supported fiat currency or another crypto asset, depending on the conversion pairs available in your region.
  4. Enter the amount of USDT you want to convert.
  5. Review the displayed quote and check how much of the selected asset you are due to receive.
  6. Check the transaction details presented before confirmation.
  7. Confirm the conversion if the displayed terms meet your requirements.
  8. View the new balance in your CEX.IO Wallet once the transaction is complete.

Available conversion pairs can differ by account and jurisdiction, so check the assets displayed in Convert when you initiate the transaction.

USDT Selling Fees and Limits

Before exchanging USDT, you can check the CEX.IO Limits and Commissions page for information about the charges and transaction limits that apply to supported services. Spot Trading uses its applicable trading fee structure, while CEX.IO Convert presents the costs connected with the conversion you are preparing to make.

You do not need to rely on that page alone. When you use either service, CEX.IO shows the relevant transaction details before you confirm the exchange, giving you the opportunity to review the applicable costs beforehand.

If you later withdraw a fiat balance, the selected withdrawal method may introduce additional fees or limits. You can review these on the Limits and Commissions page and, where relevant, with the financial service handling the withdrawal.

What to Consider Before Selling USDT

Before selling USDT, a few things can affect what happens during and after the exchange. The first is what you want to receive, whether that is GBP, another fiat currency, or a supported crypto asset.

The route you choose also plays a part. Spot Trading and CEX.IO Convert work differently, and the amount received may depend on the market, the available pair, and the pricing shown at the time.

If you plan to withdraw or transfer the resulting balance afterward, there may also be separate fees, limits, or network requirements to account for. These can vary depending on the method or asset involved.

HMRC treats selling or exchanging cryptoassets as a disposal that may give rise to Capital Gains Tax. Customers can review current HMRC guidance or seek independent tax advice where appropriate.

There is no single completion time for every USDT sale. With Spot Trading, timing can depend on the order type and whether the order finds a match in the market.
