Sell Ethereum
How to Sell Ethereum in the UK
Selling Ethereum at CEX.IO starts with one decision: what do you want to receive for your ETH? For some UK customers, that may be GBP. Others may want to exchange ETH for another supported fiat currency or cryptocurrency available through their account.
Once you know the intended outcome, you can choose between our CEX.IO Convert and Spot Trading services, provided the relevant pair is available in your region. If your ETH is stored outside CEX.IO, you can transfer it to your Wallet first and continue from there.
Below, we take you through the full process, from preparing your ETH balance to exchanging it and managing the asset or funds you receive afterwards.
What Do You Need Before You Can Sell ETH?
To exchange Ethereum through CEX.IO, ETH first needs to be available in your CEX.IO Wallet. Customers who already have an eligible account and an ETH balance can move directly to choosing an exchange route.
If you are new to CEX.IO, you will first need to register and complete the UK onboarding requirements. These include identity verification, facial recognition, the appropriateness assessment, and the 24-hour cooling-off period for first-time participants.
After completing those requirements, there are several ways ETH can reach your balance. You can transfer Ethereum from an external wallet, purchase ETH through our Buy Cryptocurrency service where available, or add supported fiat funds to your account and exchange them for ETH through Spot Trading or CEX.IO Convert.
Our How to Buy Ethereum in the UK guide covers the purchase process separately if you need more detail before moving on to the selling stage.
Decide What You Want to Receive for Your Ethereum
Selling ETH does not require you to convert it into GBP. The available destination depends on the trading and conversion pairs supported for your account.
For example, you may want to exchange ETH for:
- GBP or another supported fiat currency.
- A supported stablecoin.
- Another cryptocurrency available through Spot Trading or Convert.
That choice determines which market or conversion pair you need to use. It also affects what happens after the exchange. A fiat balance may later be withdrawn through an available route, while another crypto asset can remain stored in your CEX.IO Wallet or be transferred to an external wallet where supported.
Once you have selected the asset you want to receive, you can choose how to complete the exchange.
How to Sell ETH Through CEX.IO Convert
Our Convert service lets you exchange ETH directly for another supported asset without placing an order through the Spot Trading interface. The transaction is based on the quote shown for the selected pair before you confirm it.
To sell Ethereum in the UK through CEX.IO Convert:
1. Access your CEX.IO account and open Convert.
2. Select ETH as the asset you want to exchange.
3. Choose the asset you want to receive, based on the conversion pairs available to you.
4. Specify the amount of ETH you want to convert.
5. Review the quote shown for the transaction.
6. Check the amount you are due to receive along with the other transaction details presented before confirmation.
7. Confirm the conversion if you want to proceed with the displayed terms.
8. Open your Wallet to view the resulting balance after the transaction completes.
Because availability can vary by jurisdiction, the list of assets shown in Convert may differ between customers. The conversion screen reflects the pairs currently available to your account.
How to Sell Ethereum Through Spot Trading
Spot Trading gives you a different way to exchange ETH. Here, the transaction takes place through an available market, such as a pair that connects ETH with a supported fiat currency, stablecoin, or another crypto asset.
The process works as follows:
1. Open Spot Trading from your CEX.IO account.
2. Search for an available ETH pair that matches the asset you want to receive.
3. Choose an order type from those provided in the trading interface.
4. Enter the amount of ETH you want to sell.
5. Review the order information, including the selected market, amount, price details, and applicable trading fee.
6. Submit the order once the information matches what you intend to place.
7. Follow the order status through our trading interface.
8. Check the resulting balance after the order executes.
Unlike Convert, where you review a quote before confirming the transaction, Spot Trading depends on the selected order type and available market activity. An order may therefore execute differently depending on how it enters the market and whether matching liquidity is available.
Moving ETH From an External Wallet Before Selling
If your Ethereum is stored outside CEX.IO, you can transfer it to your CEX.IO Wallet before using Convert or Spot Trading.
Start by opening Wallet, finding ETH, and selecting the deposit function. Our platform will display the destination details required for the transfer, including the networks currently supported for your account.
From the external wallet, select a network that matches the one chosen for your CEX.IO deposit and enter the destination details shown in your account. Before sending the transaction, check the address and network information carefully.
Once the required blockchain confirmations are completed and the ETH reaches your CEX.IO balance, you can proceed with either of the exchange routes described above.
What Happens After You Sell ETH for GBP?
If you exchange ETH for GBP, the transaction creates a GBP balance in the Fiat section of your CEX.IO Wallet. At that point, the Ethereum exchange itself is complete, and you can decide how you want to manage the resulting funds.
You may keep the GBP balance within your CEX.IO account for use with services supported in your region. If you want to move it outside CEX.IO, you can request a withdrawal using one of the methods available to your account.
To start a GBP withdrawal:
- Open Wallet.
- Find GBP under the Fiat section.
- Select Withdraw.
- Enter the amount you want to withdraw.
- Review the withdrawal routes currently available to you.
- Select a method and check the applicable transaction details.
- Confirm the request after reviewing any displayed fees, limits, and conditions.
You can access this process through our web-based platform or the CEX.IO App for iOS and Android devices.
What If You Exchange ETH for Another Cryptocurrency?
Choosing another cryptocurrency as the destination gives you a different type of balance after the transaction. Instead of moving into the fiat withdrawal process, the new asset remains available in your CEX.IO Wallet.
You can continue to store it there or, if external transfers are supported for that asset and your account, send it to another wallet.
To make an external transfer, open Wallet, find the cryptocurrency you received, and select Send. Our platform will ask you to choose an available network, enter the recipient address, and specify the amount.
The sending and receiving networks need to be compatible. Checking the destination address and network before confirming is particularly important because blockchain transactions generally cannot be reversed after they are submitted and confirmed.
Ethereum Selling Fees, Limits, and Other Costs
The costs involved depend on which part of the process you are using. A Spot Trading transaction follows the applicable trading fee schedule, while CEX.IO Convert presents the relevant transaction information as part of the conversion process.
You can review current details on our Limits and Commissions page before starting. That page provides information about trading charges, transaction limits, and supported withdrawal routes.
Our platform also shows the applicable costs while you prepare a transaction, so you can review the relevant information before confirming it.
If you exchange ETH for fiat and later request a withdrawal, that withdrawal represents a separate transaction. The selected method may therefore have its own fees, limits, and processing conditions, which can also be reviewed through our Limits and Commissions page and, where relevant, with the financial service handling the withdrawal.
What Can Influence an ETH Sale?
Several parts of an Ethereum transaction can affect the final amount credited to your account. The first is the asset pair itself. Exchanging ETH for GBP is different from exchanging it for another cryptocurrency because each pair has its own pricing and market conditions.
The service you choose also changes how the exchange works. Convert uses the quote shown before confirmation, while Spot Trading relies on the order type and available market activity.
Where the ETH comes from can introduce another stage. If you first transfer Ethereum from an external wallet, blockchain confirmation requirements apply before those funds become available for exchange.
Finally, any withdrawal or external crypto transfer that follows the sale has its own conditions. This means the ETH exchange, fiat withdrawal, and blockchain transfer should be viewed as separate transactions, each with its own relevant details.
FAQ
Can I sell Ethereum for GBP at CEX.IO?
Yes, eligible UK customers can exchange ETH for GBP where a relevant pair is available through their account. Depending on availability, this can take place through CEX.IO Convert or Spot Trading. After the exchange completes, the resulting GBP amount becomes part of your fiat balance.
Do I have to sell ETH for fiat currency?
No. Ethereum can also be exchanged for another supported cryptocurrency when a relevant Spot Trading or Convert pair is available to your account. The asset you choose determines which exchange route you can use and whether the resulting balance remains crypto or becomes fiat.
Where does my ETH need to be before I can sell it?
The Ethereum involved in the transaction needs to be available in your CEX.IO Wallet. If it is currently stored elsewhere, you can transfer it to CEX.IO first using the deposit details shown for ETH in your account and a network supported for that transfer.
Can I send Ethereum to CEX.IO from another wallet?
Yes, where ETH deposits are supported for your account. Open Wallet and select ETH to view the available deposit details. When sending from another wallet, use a network supported by both sides and check the destination information before submitting the blockchain transaction.
Should I use CEX.IO Convert or Spot Trading to sell ETH?
The choice depends on how comfortable you are with each type of transaction. Convert presents a quote before confirmation, while Spot Trading involves selecting an order type and interacting with the market. Spot orders can also be affected by price movement and available liquidity, so review how each service works before proceeding.
Where can I check Ethereum trading and withdrawal fees?
Our Limits and Commissions page provides information about applicable trading charges, limits, and supported withdrawal methods. Relevant transaction costs are also shown through our platform before confirmation. If you withdraw fiat afterwards, the selected withdrawal route may have separate charges or limits.
What happens to my GBP after I sell Ethereum?
The resulting GBP is added to the Fiat section of your CEX.IO Wallet. From there, you can manage the balance through services available to your account or request a withdrawal. The routes shown during withdrawal depend on your jurisdiction, eligibility, and current service availability.
How long can an Ethereum sale take?
Timing depends on the transaction involved. Convert follows the process shown within that service, while a Spot Trading order depends on its order type and available market activity. If ETH first needs to arrive from another wallet, blockchain confirmations add a separate stage before you can exchange it.
Can selling Ethereum create a UK tax obligation?
Selling or exchanging ETH can fall within UK cryptoasset tax rules, depending on the transaction and your personal circumstances. Exchanging one cryptoasset for another can also count as a disposal for tax purposes. Current HMRC guidance provides further information, while independent tax advice may be appropriate for individual cases.
