Buy USDT in the UK with CEX.IO
For eligible UK customers, CEX.IO provides access to USDT alongside supported fiat currencies and other cryptoassets. You can use our web platform or CEX.IO App after completing the required UK onboarding process.
Below, we explain how to buy USDT with GBP, how our Buy Cryptocurrency and account-funding pathways differ, what to check when transferring USDT across blockchain networks, and what fees may apply.
How to Buy USDT in the UK on CEX.IO
A new UK account must complete registration, identity verification, and the required UK onboarding checks before supported cryptoasset services become available.
Here is how the process works.
Step 1 – Register with CEX.IO
Visit CEX.IO or install the CEX.IO App and create an account.
You will need to:
- Enter your email address.
- Set a strong password.
- Select the United Kingdom as your country of residence.
- Review the applicable terms.
- Confirm your email address.
UK-based customers also complete an appropriateness assessment covering cryptoasset knowledge, associated risks, and previous experience.
First-time cryptoasset participants must complete the required 24-hour cooling-off period before making their first cryptoasset purchase.
Step 2 – Complete Identity Verification
Identity verification requires information that allows us to confirm who you are.
The process may include:
- Personal details.
- Your residential address.
- A passport, driving licence, or another accepted identification document.
- Facial recognition.
We may request additional information where applicable.
Once you complete verification, the appropriateness assessment, and any required cooling-off period, supported services become available according to your account eligibility.
Step 3 – Buy USDT or Add GBP to Your Account
There are two main purchase pathways worth understanding.
Buy USDT Through Buy Cryptocurrency
Our Buy Cryptocurrency service lets eligible customers purchase supported assets through a dedicated purchase interface. You can use an available payment method to buy USDT or other supported cryptocurrencies, which are then added to your CEX.IO Wallet, without placing an order through Spot Trading or using other trading tools.
To buy USDT:
- Open Buy Cryptocurrency.
- Set GBP as the currency you plan to spend.
- Enter an amount.
- Select Tether (USDT).
- Click Buy Crypto.
- Choose an available payment method.
*The funding gateways shown depend on your location, account status, and availability.
- Review the quote and applicable charges.
- Confirm the purchase if the details meet your requirements.
Fund Your GBP Balance First
You can also add GBP to your CEX.IO account first and exchange it for USDT afterwards. This route separates the fiat funding stage from the crypto transaction, which may be useful if you prefer to review each part of the process individually.
To begin, open Wallet, select Add Funds, choose GBP, and enter the amount you want to add. Your account will then display the funding gateways currently available to you, together with any relevant limits or transaction details shown before confirmation.
Once the GBP balance is credited to your account, you can decide how you want to exchange it for USDT. CEX.IO Convert lets you select GBP and USDT and review the displayed quote before confirming the transaction. Alternatively, you can use an available USDT market through Spot Trading if you prefer to place and manage an order yourself.
Step 4 – Access USDT Through CEX.IO Wallet
When a USDT purchase completes, the asset appears in your CEX.IO Wallet.
From there, supported account functionality can include storing USDT, sending or receiving it, converting it into another supported asset, or accessing available trading markets.
How USDT Differs From Other Cryptoassets
USDT belongs to a category known as stablecoins. Tether designed USDT to maintain a value linked to the U.S. dollar.
That does not remove cryptoasset risk.
A stablecoin does not operate in the same way as money stored in a UK bank account, and its structure differs from fiat currency issued by a central bank. Customers should understand the issuer, reserve model, redemption arrangements, blockchain infrastructure, and other relevant risks before using any stablecoin.
The market price of USDT can also move above or below its intended reference value under certain market conditions.
For UK-based customers using GBP, another factor comes into play: the GBP/USD relationship. Even where USDT trades close to one U.S. dollar, the amount of GBP required to obtain it can change as foreign-exchange markets move.
(H2) USDT Networks: Why the Network Deserves Attention
USDT exists across multiple blockchains. That means a wallet or platform may support USDT on one network while supporting different networks elsewhere.
For this reason, when transferring USDT make sure to:
- Check the network available in your CEX.IO account.
- Check which network the destination wallet supports.
- Confirm that the networks match.
- Review the address before submitting the transfer.
- Check the applicable withdrawal and network information.
Do not assume that every USDT address works across every blockchain. Using incompatible deposit and withdrawal networks can result in loss of funds. The deposit or withdrawal screen in your account provides the relevant network information for the transaction you intend to make, so make sure to double-check every detail before confirming a transaction on CEX.IO.
Ways to Use USDT Through CEX.IO
USDT often acts as a bridge between different parts of the crypto market, and customers use it for several purposes depending on their individual requirements.
Through our supported services, eligible customers may be able to:
- Store USDT in CEX.IO Wallet.
- Exchange USDT through CEX.IO Convert.
- Trade supported USDT markets through Spot Trading.
- Send USDT to an external compatible wallet.
- Receive USDT from an external wallet using a supported network.
- Exchange USDT for a supported fiat currency where an appropriate route is available.
Spot Trading may appeal to customers who want to work with market or limit orders and available trading pairs. Convert offers a different interface for customers who want to exchange supported balances without using an order book.
Neither service removes market or execution risk, and availability depends on your account and region.
(H2) USDT Fees and Transaction Limits
What you pay when purchasing, converting, trading, or transferring USDT varies depending on the CEX.IO service involved and the route used to complete the transaction. A purchase made through our Buy Cryptocurrency service, for example, may include charges connected with the purchase service and the funding gateway available to your account. Before you confirm the transaction, you can review the amount being spent, the USDT you are set to receive, and any applicable charges shown on screen.
The fee structure is different when you use our exchange services. CEX.IO Convert presents a quote for the proposed exchange before confirmation, allowing you to review the terms of the transaction in advance. Spot Trading follows the applicable trading fee schedule, with fees determined by factors such as your trading activity and the order that is executed.
Sending USDT to an external wallet can introduce additional costs that do not apply when the asset remains within your CEX.IO account. Depending on the network selected, a withdrawal may include a withdrawal fee or blockchain-related charge. Since USDT is available across multiple blockchain networks, the details shown for one transfer route may differ from those displayed for another.
Limits also depend on the service being used. The amount you can purchase, exchange, deposit, or withdraw may vary according to your account status, verification level, funding gateway, transaction type, and other account-specific conditions. This means the limit shown for a direct USDT purchase may not be the same as the amount available for a crypto withdrawal or exchange.
For the most relevant information, review the figures presented in your account before confirming a transaction and consult our Limits and Commissions page for further details about the fees and limits that may apply.
